Arts and Culture in Haliburton County
Few rural communities in Canada have cultivated a cultural life as rich as Haliburton County's. Something about this landscape — its light on water, its seasonal drama, its quiet that invites reflection — has drawn artists for generations. Today, the county sustains a vibrant arts community that encompasses visual artists, performing artists, craftspeople, writers, and musicians, all contributing to a cultural scene that draws visitors from across the province.
The Haliburton County Studio Tour
The annual Haliburton County Studio Tour is the centrepiece of the county's arts calendar and one of the most celebrated studio tours in Canada. Held each autumn over two weekends, the tour opens the studios and working spaces of more than 150 participating artists to the public.
Visitors can watch potters at the wheel, printmakers at the press, weavers at the loom, and painters before their canvases. The breadth of work is extraordinary: photography, woodworking, sculpture, jewellery, glass art, leather craft, fibre arts, ceramics, and painting in every medium. The tour is self-guided and free to attend, with artists selling work from their studios.
The tour spans the county's geography — from studios in Haliburton Village to remote workshops deep in the Highlands — making it as much a drive through autumn landscape as it is an arts experience. The Haliburton Highlands Arts Tours website publishes the official map and artist registry each year.
Visual Arts
Year-round gallery spaces in Haliburton Village and surrounding communities keep the visual arts scene active beyond the Studio Tour. The Rails End Gallery and Arts Centre in Haliburton Village is the county's primary public arts facility, presenting exhibitions of local and visiting artists in multiple gallery spaces and hosting workshops, classes, and cultural events.
Commercial galleries throughout the county represent local artists working in landscape painting, nature photography, abstract art, and craft. Many artists maintain galleries at their studios and sell directly to collectors year-round.
Live Music
The Haliburton Concert Series has brought professional classical and contemporary music to the county for nearly four decades. The series presents three to four concerts per season at the Northern Lights Performing Arts Pavilion, featuring nationally and internationally recognized musicians. Past performers have included members of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, internationally trained pianists, and chamber ensembles of extraordinary calibre.
Beyond the Concert Series, live music is a regular part of Haliburton County life. Local pubs and restaurants host musicians on weekends. Community dances feature everything from classic rock cover bands to traditional fiddle music. The Haliburton Highlands Music Festival celebrates young musical talent each spring in a competitive festival that has launched many professional careers.
Theatre
The Highlands Little Theatre has been presenting community theatre productions in the county for many years, staging everything from light comedies to classic dramas in a genuine community theatre tradition. Productions draw actors and audience members from across the county, and opening nights are social events in the fullest sense.
